California Consumer Law Support Project

NCLC’s California Consumer Law Support Project strengthens the capacity of legal services organizations to provide essential consumer law services to low-income Californians. It supports California Legal Services organizations through trainings, technical support, and advocacy.

Policy Advocacy

In California, NCLC retains Kaiser Advocacy to support legislative and regulatory reforms that benefit California Legal Services and their clients by sponsoring bills and supporting the bills of the coalition of groups fighting for economic justice–such as the California Low Income Consumer Coalition. NCLC’s experts also regularly consult with legislative and agency staff on consumer law issues as well as with the California Economic Justice Community. Through these consultations, NCLC can help elevate what front line legal service providers are seeing on the ground.

Consumer Law Litigation & Technical Support

NCLC regularly provides legal technical assistance on federal and California consumer law to the California Legal Services Community, and greater economic justice community. NCLC provides case consultations, litigation analysis, legal research, and amicus support to legal services and pro bono attorneys handling matters ranging from debt collection and credit reporting to student lending, and financial services. NCLC also co-counsels with legal services programs including cases with Elder Law Advocates (Gout v. Unison) and Public Counsel (California Bail Bonds Litigation).

Consumer Law Training

NCLC hosts several conferences each year including the annual Consumer Rights Litigation Conference. NCLC provides scholarship opportunities for legal services attorneys to attend. Throughout the year NCLC experts deliver free webinars, both directly and by partnering with state specific groups, such as  the Legal Aid Association of California

Consumer Law Publications & Resources

NCLC produces a large volume of technical, policy, and practice materials that help further the goals of legal services groups.
