Appearing in Word in Black on March 12, 2024, Bria Overs interviews Nketiah “Ink” Berko, Equal Justice Works Fellow, sponsored by the Rossotti Foundation, for coverage of NCLC’s report, Keeping It In The Family: Legal Strategies to Address the Challenge of Heirs Property and Prevent Home Loss.

With Black families losing their land at alarming rates, Overs looks at how splitting property among relatives can build wealth when done right.

“The immediate cause of home loss is the lack of estate planning. Either someone didn’t write a will, or maybe they did, but in the will, they left the home to five or six people. And by doing that, they’ve fractured the homeownership interests in the property.”
