Contact with a debt collector is a common experience for Americans. In 2017, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) released a nationally-representative survey of consumer experiences with debt collection, finding that more than 70 million Americans – about one third of consumers – were contacted by a creditor or debt collector about a debt in collection during the prior 12 months.1
