Appearing in Next Avenue on May 12, 2025, Chris Farrell quotes NCLC Co-Director of Advocacy Abby Shafroth in part 6 of a 12-part collaborative series between Next Avenue and Marketplace Morning Report covering how students in college rely on loans to pay for much of their higher education bill, and many young adults with student debt struggle to repay their loans while launching their careers and households.

“They had to take care of a family member. The economy crumbled. They couldn’t afford to keep going to school, and so they have debt, but no degree.

“What we see is that the people who are older adults who still have student loan debt are actually in a financially worse place than those who never attended college at all.”

Abby Shafroth, director of the Student Loan Borrower Assistance Project at the National Consumer Law Center.
