Leigh Ferrin Will Head the New Project, Aimed at Increasing Capacity of Legal Services Programs to Address Consumer Law Issues

LOS ANGELES  – The National Consumer Law Center (NCLC) today announced the launch of its California Consumer Law Support Project to strengthen the capacity of legal services organizations to provide essential consumer law services to low-income Californians.

Leigh Ferrin, a veteran California legal services attorney, is joining NCLC to lead the new initiative, which will expand legal services providers’ ability to address critical legal needs related to debt collection, predatory lending, bankruptcy, and other consumer law issues.

“The NCLC California Consumer Law Support Project will tailor NCLC’s deep expertise in consumer law specifically for California’s legal services community,” said Richard Dubois, executive director of the National Consumer Law Center. “I’m proud that NCLC is making this investment in the nation’s largest legal services community. And I’m thrilled that Leigh, with her strong track record of helping California legal service organizations advance economic justice, will lead this new project.”

NCLC leads the national fight for economic justice through strategic advocacy, training, and high-impact litigation. In addition to federal advocacy, NCLC provides expertise and assistance for state advocacy. California is the first state where NCLC has established a dedicated state-level initiative to partner with legal services across the state to strengthen their ability to address consumer law issues.

“I’m honored to join NCLC as the inaugural California Project Director,” said Leigh Ferrin, who most recently served as Strategy Director at OneJustice. “I’ve been lucky to work with many NCLC experts during my legal services career, and I’m excited to join them to strengthen the network of services available to low-income Californians.”

A graduate of Loyola Law School and Pomona College, Ferrin also previously served as Director of Legal Services at the Public Law Center. She is an instructor at UC Irvine School of Law, a board member of the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence, and a member of the California Low-Income Consumer Coalition.

Founded in 1969 during the national war on poverty, NCLC works with nonprofit and legal services organizations across the nation to stop exploitative practices, help financially stressed families build and retain wealth, and advance economic fairness.
