Appearing in Business Insider on August 18, 2026, Emily Stewart talks to NCLC Senior Attorney Carolyn Carter about New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s targeting of the fees, scams, and bureaucratic headaches that make day-to-day life in New York slightly more annoying.

Some of Mamdani’s efforts are aimed at tackling what’s been dubbed the “annoyance economy,” the little administrative hurdles consumers and businesses face that cost them money, energy, and time.

“This is not small potatoes. Junk fees and making it difficult to cancel are ways that companies use to set up a long-term drain on consumers’ pocketbooks.”

Carolyn Carter, a senior attorney at the National Consumer Law Center.
