The CFPB’s Debt Collection Rule

In May 2019, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) released a proposed debt collection rule, impacting some 71 million American consumers. The proposal,  experts at the National Consumer Law Center warn, “provides numerous gifts to debt collectors with limited new protections for consumers.”

Take Action: Protect Consumers from Harassing and Abusive Debt Collection Tactics

The CFPB’s proposed rule is open to public comment until August 19, 2019, and consumers of all stripes are encouraged to provide unique comments highlighting their or a loved one’s interactions with debt collectors and financial struggles leading up having debt(s) in collections.

Comments can be submitted via the Federal eRulemaking Portal (www.regulations.gov) under Docket Number CFPB-2019-0022 or by email (2019-NPRM-DebtCollection@cfpb.gov) with CFPB-2019-0022 in the subject line.
