A Burgeoning Debt-Collection Industry is Running Wild
– and Often Flouting the Law

Consumers and their lawyers from around the country have been calling us at NCLC to share their debt-collection horror stories. Harassment, abuse and clearly-illegal tactics appear to be the norm for many debt collectors. And to top it off a sizeable minority of the consumers they target don’t even owe the money!

Our goals at NCLC are to strengthen the hand of consumers and their lawyers in fighting these tactics – through legal training, legislative work and public exposure of bad behavior. It’s important to remember that the vast majority of those who do owe money aren’t “deadbeats” – just people who’ve hit a bad patch due to unforeseen circumstances. They have every intention of paying when they can.
